The Commercial Vehicle Road worthiness Test (previously DOE ) is a road worthiness test for all commercial vehicles (vans, motor caravans, buses with more than 8 seats, trucks, trailers & ambulances) over 1 year old. It ensures that all commercial vehicles on Irish roads are up to standard and safe for use on public roads. It is done annually and every year after that, throughout the life of the vehicle.
There are 2 types of commercial tests:
1. LCV’s : Light Commercial Vehicles: These are all commercial vehicles with a GVW of 3500kg or less.
2. HCV’s: Heavy Commercial Vehicles: Any vehicle with a GVW exceeding 3500kg and includes trucks, trailers, ambulances, motor caravans and buses with 8 seats or more.
The tester will check your vehicle thoroughly for any defects or faults and afterwards will provide you with a list of repairs required for your vehicle to pass the CVRT. If your vehicle is in satisfactory condition you will be issued with your pass statement after the test.
You can find out when your vehicle is due its CVR Test by going to www.cvrt.ie and clicking on the “Check my CRW” button.

After calibrating the speed limiter a plaque will be fitted to your vehicle. Your Speed Limiter must be working correctly in order to pass the CVRT.
Here at McCormacks Auto Centre we have been certified by the NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) to Install, Calibrate and Repair Speed Limiters.

Wheel balancing and alignment are 2 very different things but people often get them confused.
Wheel Alignment involves the correct angling of your wheels so that they are perpendicular to the road and parallel to each other. It reduces wear of your tyres and when done correctly will stop your vehicle ‘pulling’ off to one side of the road.
You may be in need of Wheel Alignment if you experience any of the following.
- Your tyres are wearing unevenly.
- Pulling effect to one side of the road away from the centre line.
- Steering wheel is not centred when travelling on a straight road.
- Unsteadiness on a straight level road.
Wheel Balancing allows the wheel and tyre combination to spin without causing vibrations. It is done by finding any heavy spots on your wheels and counteracting this by placing lead weights on the other side of the wheel.
Your wheels may need to be balanced if you experience any of the following.
- Vibration in the steering wheel when travelling at speeds over 80km/p/h.
- Vibrations felt through the seat or floors of the vehicle.
- Uneven tyre wear.
If you think your vehicle is in need of wheel alignment or balancing call us today to book your appointment. Our experienced technicians are on hand to not only fix the problem, but determine its source, as to put your mind at ease.
Your braking system is probably the most important system in your car. They are also one of the most heavily used components of your vehicle. Your brake callipers, discs and pads work simultaneously to ensure you can stop your vehicle safely in everyday and emergency situations. This is why it is necessary to have them checked regularly.
Ignoring wear and tear of your brake pads will eventually lead to pressure on other braking components which will end up more costly in the long term.
You will know when it is time to check your brakes when
- Your brake fluid levels are low.
- Your vehicle pulls to one side.
- You can hear screeching or scraping noises when braking.
- Your brake warning light comes on.
- It takes longer to bring your vehicle to a stop under normal driving conditions.
- The handbrake has difficulty holding.
If you experience any of the above issues call us immediately to book your vehicle in for a routine brake check. We can provide an obligation free check of your braking system and quote for repairs.
Lights
Driving a vehicle with missing lights can be dangerous. It is vital that you check your lights on a regular basis. Your lights identify you on the road and let other road users know what you are doing or going to do.
You should check the following regularly:
- Headlight & Dims.
- Tail lights.
- Stop lamps.
- Reversing lights.
- Brake lights.
- Fog lamps.
If you need replacement bulbs or lamp repairs call our team.
Tyres
Don’t underestimate the importance of your tyres. They are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road. Good tyres reduce stopping distances, reduce skidding and increase your vehicles performance. Un-inflated, worn or poor tyres decrease your vehicles performance; increase stopping distances and wear much faster.
Make sure you regularly inspect your tyres by following these simple steps:
- Check your manufacturer’s manual for your vehicles ideal tyre pressure.
- Check tyre pressures at least once a month.
- Do not under inflate.
- Do not overinflate: this is just as dangerous! It reduces grip and braking becomes unstable.
- Check tyre condition: Look out for cracks, damaged threads or bulges.
- Contact us immediately if you think you may require a tyre replacement. We can do a courtesy check for you.
We stock a large range of quality tyres such as Bridgestone, Firestone and Perelli. We can also source a cheaper alternative if need’s be.
Services offered include
- Timing belt check & replacement.
- Gearbox refurbishment and installation.
- Clutch kit installation.
- Engine refurbishment & installation.

- Your vehicle ‘wandering’ on the road.
- Your steering wheel quickly bouncing back and forth.
- Your vehicle bouncing repetitively after going over bumps or on uneven roads.
- The steering becoming difficult.
- The steering is slipping back & forth.
We can offer a courteous check of your steering and suspension. Steering and suspension problems can be caused by a wide range of issues. We promise to identify the problem quickly, ensuring all possibilities are considered so that you don’t pay more than you need to. Call us today for an obligation free quote.

- Chassis Modifications.
- Changing the classification of a vehicle from Private to Commercial use.
- Addition of or removal of axles from a vehicle.
- Any modification that changes safety aspects of the vehicle.

In accordance with EU and National law Trucks and Buses must be fitted with recording devices known as Tachographs. They measure driving times and rest periods of drivers. It also records distance travelled and vehicle speed. Each driver has their own personal Tachograph card that they must use when driving a Truck or Bus. This ensures that the laws governing rest times and driver hours are adhered to. The RSA is the governing body over Tachograph inspections and can issue penalties and fines to any driver not adhering to these strict codes of conduct.
At McCormacks Auto Centre we are accredited by the NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) to install and calibrate Analogue and Digital Tachographs and our dedicated staff are fully trained by Continental VDO in their use and operation. The requirements for Tachograph Calibration are as follows:
Analogue: Calibration once every 6 years & an Inspection once every 2 years.
Digital: A digital Tachograph is calibrated every 2 years from the date of installation.
There are circumstances where you may be exempt from having a Tachograph fitted or calibrated in your vehicle. A full list of exemptions can be viewed on the RSA website (http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Professional-Drivers/Tachograph-cards/Exemptions/). However, if your Tachograph works through the speed limiter you will be required to have the Tachograph calibrated, regardless of this exemption.
